Durch die einmalige Welt der Atacama läuft die Strecke von Antofagasta, gelegen am Pazifik, hinauf nach Socompa an der Grenze zu Argentinien. Dabei erreicht sie abschnittsweise eine Höhe von mehr als 4.000 m.
